Windows 10: Why use Task View?
Last Updated 4 years ago
In this article we will go over Task View and how it can benefit your work capabilities.
Windows 10 has a program called, 'Task View' in which this will allow the user to check available applications that are already open, and also selecting multiple layers of desktop to have several of them by individual names.
How is this relevant? This process allows for the user to have better management of which desktop layer they have applications opened.
For example: Desktop can be where normal applications are opened up, but after you have 20 tabs of chrome, a dozen word/excel documents this can get daunting and the user has to spend more time thinking 'what is what' than actually working.
To better manage this process of processing information the user can break up their desktop into layers so each one can have a specific function.
Aka: Desktop 1 Word documents with Chrome open and Chrome has relevant sites to the word documents, Desktop 2 Excel documents and Chrome has relevant sites to the Excel documents.
This can then allow the user to start relaxing mentally as the tabs and open documents will be on each layer freeing up visual space and better management capabilities.
Step 1.) To access Task View select the "scroll with boxes" icon on the taskbar

Step 2.) A new window will appear on your screen of each application opened up and in the upper Left-hand corner, the user can create a new desktop layer by Left-click on "+ New Desktop".

Step 3.) As we can see from the screenshot the preview now has Desktop 1 & Desktop 2

Step 4.) We can rename each layer name to one that suits the users needs, for this example I will do "Work" and "Excel"

Step 5.) From this preview area we can hover our mouse cursor over each one and select "Work" or "Excel"
Step 6.) It will appear as if you have a brand new desktop area to work in with new open icons on your taskbar or anything displaying that was opened in "Work" desktop layer.
This is where we can start to see the possibilities with creating multi layer desktops to suit our needs.
Step 7.) Keyboard Shortcuts are a must with using task view that way you can simply press a keyboard command; instead of, going through multiple desktops through all the steps above.
The first Keyboard Shortcut to interact with multiple applications open is:
Pressing "Alt" & "Tab" together after the popup appears the user must hold both down at same time then simply keep pressing "Tab" to go through each available application window already opened while holding down the "Alt" key all the time. When done selecting the application you want to open let go of the "Alt" key and that application will open up while in that one desktop layer.
The second Keyboard Shortcut to interact with multiple desktop layers is:
Pressing "Windows" & "Ctrl" & "Tab" all at the same time with one hand & pressing "Left" or "Right" arrow keys with the other hand to go through each desktop layer. (This helps with privacy and with showing someone a specific application without them seeing everything you have open)
This concludes this article about Windows 10 Task View and how to select multiple applications that are opened as well as having multiple desktop layers.
