VDI Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • What is VDI?
    • Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a new take on the traditional client-server computing model. With VDI, rather than logging into and using a PC that is physically next to you, you're actually using a Virtual Machine that lives on a server in our datacenter. VDI affords its users a powerful and flexible computing platform that is available from any PC on WNCC's Campus.
  • Why use VDI instead of a Traditional PC?
    • Portability - Your VDI session is available wherever there is a physically networked WNCC Thin Client or Workstation. Compare that to a Traditional PC, which is restricted to a single physical location.
    • Flexibility - VDI affords administrators to craft and tailor computing environments that meet various Faculty and Staff requirements. Need a pool of VMs for a specific class containing a specific software title? VDI can do that!
    • Scalability - VDI affords the ability to scale the power requirements of a VM as the task requires it. If your VM pool dictates a lot of computing horsepower to run a demanding program, such as AutoCAD, we can scale the VM pool to meet the demand!

Now onto some of the more pointed questions regarding individual VM pools and their feature sets.
  • My Blue Connection Bar is Gone! Where did it go?
    • Starting with the 2019 Employee and Student VM Pools, the Blue Connection Bar that was traditionally present has been set to automatically hide itself after your sessions starts. If you still need it, press the Ctrl+Alt+Home keys, and the bar will appear for a few moments before hiding itself again.
  • How do I lock my VDI Session?
    • Use the Ctrl+Alt+End keys, and then select the Lock button. Alternatively, your Lock button should already be selected when you hit the Ctrl+Alt+End keys, so pressing Enter after the menu pops up will lock your session.
